Kathy Cato, M.A., LPC 5500 McNeely Drive Suite 101 Raleigh, NC 27612 About the Counselor My practice is focused on helping couples. I have been working with couples in all stages of relationships, and in all types of relationships for my entire professional career of 21 years. My practice style is relaxed, personal, and informal. Clients describe me as refreshingly straight forward and interactive. I like to work hard with each couple to establish relief quickly and get recovery moving. I believe that one of the truest tests of having found the right professional to work with you is how quickly you feel a benefit from the counseling. I often suggest activities between sessions to keep your learning fresh and give it real life relevance. Years ago, I noted that most couples counseling is anecdotal, or based on the psychological theory of the therapist. Fortunately, in recent years, there has been a growth of research in the area of relationships. This research provides the basis for the work I do with couples. The work I do is not based primarily on unproven theory. It is based on scientific studies of what works for couples and what does not. The most important choice you make after deciding to ask for help, is your choice of counselor. Your ability to reach your goal of restoring your faith in the relationship, your respect for one another, and your commitment to the relationship depends to a great extent upon the experience and training of your therapist. Don't make your choice simply by scheduling with the first therapist who has an open appointment. Ask about the experience of the counselor. Ask about the philosophy that guides the counselor's treatment. Ask if the treatment is a structured program, or open ended sessions. Choose a counselor who is EXPERIENCED, DIRECT, DYNAMIC, CERTAIN, and KNOWS what works, based on the research. Choose an experienced counselor with a practice that focuses on relationships. I obtained my Masters Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling from the University of North Texas in 1988, and have provided seminars , counseling, and training to other counselors in the area of relationships consistently since that time. Topics I present to community and professional groups include: Relationship Compatibility, Online Dating, Communication, Boundaries, and Recovering from Infidelity.
